Mazzei Siepi is one of the so called "Super Tuscans" that are conquering the wine world at the moment. The term was first penned by Robert Parker Jnr to describe the small group of wines such as Sassicaia, Solaia, Masetto and Ornellaia who were making wines in Tuscany from non-indigenous grapes such as cabernet, syrah and merlot.
30 years later and there are many wines that are called SuperTuscans but there really is not much "Super" about them.
Mazzei Siepi thoroughly deserves the accolades it is getting. We have a handful for sale here today. This is no overnight success. The winery was established in the 14th century and has stayed in family hands throughout that time, now in its 24th generation.
Philip Mazzei (1730-1816), was an illustrious Italian political thinker, philosopher and winemaker. A close friend of USA President Thomas Jefferson, the two men reportedly exchanged winemaking tips and vineyard techniques. The great doctrine ‘All men are created equal’, incorporated into the Declaration of Independence by Jefferson, was paraphrased from the writings of Philip Mazzei.
Whilst Mazzei Siepi is a beautiful expression of Tuscan merlot blended with sangiovese, Philip is made with a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon selected from all the Mazzei’s estates, Philip is the quintessence of Tuscany. It embodies the “New World” spirit of Tuscan winemaking, best represents the “revolutionary” character of Philip Mazzei, and expresses the desire to pursue happiness. Full, ripe and intriguing body, long bold palate with pleasant and fresh aftertaste to round things off.
We urge you to try this very reasonably priced Italian cabernet.
